Renowned for its wide beach, stunning sunsets, rich heritage, charming hotels, bustling shops, sidewalk cafes and entertainment, Glenelg is one of Adelaide’s premier seaside destinations. Being located only 20 minutes from the city and five minutes from the airport, it’s a major attraction for visitors to Adelaide, as well as being a vibrant place to live.
Jetty Road is a key asset for the area, acting as both the gateway for visitors arriving by tram from the city, and as a high street serving the local community. A masterplan for Jetty Road was therefore needed to create a unified planning and design framework, acting as an overall vision for the street and a guide for future development.
The Jetty Road, Glenelg Masterplan Project commenced in early 2017 and included three phases of public consultation extending over 20 weeks. The aim of the project was to capture diverse perspectives from the many different users of Jetty Road, so that the masterplan put forward to Council would be an accurate and balanced representation of stakeholder’s needs and desires. Input and ideas were sourced via targeted consultations as well as general community engagement, which generated thousands of comments. Key themes included; accessibility, cycling, parking, footpaths, public transport, traffic and street greening, amongst others.
The final Masterplan was endorsed by Council in early 2018. The Masterplan retains the distinctive character of Jetty Road, whilst proposing new ideas and improvements that contribute to its attractiveness and function. Implementation of the Masterplan has been estimated as requiring investment in the order of $19 million and is expected to be implemented over a 10-year period.
